Sierra Community College District Learning Resource Center |
Rocklin, CA Sierra Community College District |
The Learning Resource Center for the Sierra College campus north of Sacramento presented interesting challenges for the SKW design team. Originally master planned to anchor one end of the Sierra College campus, the LRC building plan was shifted to a smaller more central location to preserve oak trees on the original site. Program requirements on the new, more constricted site dictated a building of three-story mass in the midst of one and two story buildings. The design breaks each facade into smaller units by utilizing recessed balconies on upper floors, which are used by staff for work/study areas.
This building, because of its location, size and design, has become the predominant structure on campus. The LRC's design is unique, and materials and forms were specially selected for the building's unusual size, and for cost efficiencies as well.
